Chelmsford Place Promendade, Leeton
Chelmsford Place Promenade is a significant public space which was originally designed by Walter Burley Griffin as an integral part of Leeton's urban design. The design seeks to restore the original design intention of a central town square with a bold land axis, ornamental pools and shaded promenades and reference the art deco character of the town.
A sequence of connected spaces with views along the central axis is proposed. The existing road between the two top islands will be removed to create a connected, open green space. Art deco inspired arbors (or portals) connect the lower and upper islands. A dethridge wheel sculptural feature, connecting rill and 'dry' fountain with pop-jets celebrate Leeton’s history as the birthplace of the MIA. Two separate open lawn areas facing the existing bandstand and central water tower providing spaces for informal gathering and community events.
